MADE IN MILWAUKEE: BURN THE NOTE

About a month ago, I was asked to be a part of a show that the always brilliant gang from Made In Milwaukee were putting together. It was a fund-raiser for the Turners, who so kindly provide Milwaukee with one of its best concert venues. My responsibility was live art. Made In Milwaukee came up with the idea to have myself and two other artists (him and him) paint for two solid hours. Each painting would take no more than 15 minutes, and would be based on a phrase found on one of the many slips of paper dropped into a little yellow bucket. Attendees were encouraged to draw one of the said slips, hand it to the artist of their choosing, and watch the (very mild) magic unfold.

Here’s what I did, complete with the phrases they were based on. All are available for sale. Email someone at dwellephant dot com to get the scoop.

(This first one was a warm-up, done to pass the time until someone was ready to play.)

Note: This was the toughest one to draw, because I’m optimistic about a lot of things. But choosing one that makes sense to someone other than lil’ ol’ me was tough. So I opted to complete the sentence as “I am an optimist about the night turning into day.” Don’t know what philosophical category that would fall under, but if any of you reading this are philosophy majors, drop some knowledge in the comments section.
